For many creators, an award isn’t just a trophy—it’s validation, a milestone that marks years of dedication.
As the anticipation builds for the Comic Con Ibadan 2025, a member of the judging panel for its award categories, Ray Anyasi, reflects on the significance of this recognition for comic creators across Nigeria. For the third consecutive year, the esteemed award categories promise to recognise outstanding talent in the Nigerian comic industry, focusing on writers and artists whose creativity and dedication have contributed significantly to the field.
In his reflection, Ray describes the weight of the responsibility. “As a creator, I understand what it means for writers and artists to have their work acknowledged. For many, this award may represent the pinnacle of their career, a milestone they will cherish,” he stated. The past year has seen extraordinary achievements within the Nigerian comic scene, showcasing individual and collective efforts that rival the best works globally. Some winners from the last edition of the awards went on to achieve further international acclaim.

But what truly makes a work award-worthy? What sets one story apart from the rest? The judging process prompts such important questions. Ray acknowledges that the answers are not straightforward. “Art is subjective, and the appreciation of a book often rests in the context of its audience. Understanding the nuances of that audience’s language is crucial for an effective evaluation,” he explained.
Beyond standard and technical criteria—such as plot coherence, technical accuracy, and editing quality—are considered, the ultimate decision may rely on how well a story resonates with the judges. “The real challenge lies not just in the quality of the work but in how many judges it appeals to. A book that doesn’t connect with a judge doesn’t inherently lack merit; it simply may not align with their tastes.”
Ray urges creators to remain focused on their core mission: telling meaningful stories to their audience. “If you can connect with readers, you’ve already succeeded. Every individual reader who resonates with your story signifies an award in their heart,” Ray emphasized. The outcome in terms of nominations or wins should not diminish the quality of one’s work, nor should it imply that the winning entries are superior.
As the Comic Con Ibadan 2025 Awards draw near, Ray encourages creators to embrace the journey and continue honing their craft. “Whatever the result, keep writing and stay joyous in your storytelling journey. The essence of your work transcends accolades; it’s about the impact you have on your readers,” he concluded.
