Comic books are a diverse and vibrant medium, where storytelling and art intertwine to create immersive experiences. “Lake of Tears,” a noteworthy addition to this landscape, exemplifies how powerful narratives and striking visuals can come together to captivate audiences. The comic book was produced by BZL Illustration Studios in partnership with Challenging Heights, a child’s rights group.
Lake of Tears explores the issue of child trafficking in Ghana. It is a story told through the perspective of three teenagers who met in Lake Volta. It introduces readers to the plight of trafficked children who are forced to work in hazardous conditions. The story is by Kobe Ofei, the art is by Setor Fiadzigbey, and John Schaidler was the managing editor.
In this critique, we delve into the strengths and areas for improvement within this ambitious comic, offering insights into what makes it a notable entry in the genre.

Artistic Excellence
The artwork in “Lake of Tears” is undoubtedly one of its most striking features. The artists expertly employ shadows and light to foster an atmosphere that is both haunting and evocative. This use of contrast not only enhances the mood but also draws readers deeply into the emotional landscape of the story. In Part 01, Page 07, for instance, the application of dark tones and stark contrasts during the night-time scenes effectively conveys the despair and fear experienced by the characters. The detailed expressions on the characters’ faces, particularly in Part 02, Page 15, where Opanyin grapples with overwhelming sadness, invite the reader into the emotional core of the narrative. These intricately defined expressions and dynamic body language allow their emotions to resonate profoundly with the audience.
However, there are moments where the background details could be more refined. The scenery during the chase scene in Part 03, Page 19, is one such example. It appears somewhat underdeveloped, detracting from the immersive quality of the setting. While the emphasis on characters is commendable, a richer and more consistent approach to the environment would further engage readers. By paying closer attention to these elements, the artists could elevate the overall visual experience, transforming each panel into a more cohesive part of the story.
Compelling Storytelling
The narrative of “Lake of Tears” is both engaging and thought-provoking. The story unfolds at a well-measured pace, striking a balance between action and quieter moments that facilitate character development. In Part 02, Pages 12-14, for instance, the narrative takes a moment to delve into a character’s backstory, providing context that deepens our understanding of their motivations and struggles. This exploration of themes such as resilience and survival were handled sensitively, making the narrative both powerful and relatable.
Despite its strengths, the storytelling occasionally lacks subtlety. Some plot points are presented too directly, which can dilute their emotional impact. The character’s internal monologue in Part 04, Page 28 is a clear case in point. A more nuanced approach, wherein certain elements are left open to the reader’s interpretation, could add depth and complexity to the narrative. Rather than explicitly stating that the character is terrified, allowing the visuals and context to convey this would foster a deeper connection with the reader.

Realistic and Engaging Dialogue
Dialogue plays a crucial role in “Lake of Tears,” bringing authenticity to the characters and their experiences. The voices of the characters are distinct and well-crafted, with language that reflects their backgrounds and personalities. The exchange between Aya, Kyei, and Anima in Part 03, Page 20, during a moment of crisis, feels raw and genuine, capturing their desperation and fear. This attention to detail adds a layer of realism that enriches the reader’s connection to the story.
That said, there are instances where the dialogue could benefit from being more concise. For instance, in Part 01, Page 05, a conversation regarding the looming threat extends over several panels, reiterating previously established points. Although extended dialogues can be rich in detail, they sometimes slow the narrative's pacing. Streamlining such conversations would help maintain the story’s momentum, ensuring that readers remain fully engaged without feeling that the narrative is dragging.
Effective Pacing
Pacing is a critical component of any successful comic, and “Lake of Tears” manages this aspect with skill. The transitions between scenes are smooth, and the story progresses at a steady rhythm that keeps the reader invested. For example, the blend of action sequences in Part 02, Page 17, alongside reflective moments, is well-balanced; each panel builds tension and urgency, permitting the narrative to breathe without losing its drive.
However, not all scenes maintain this focus. Certain emotional beats are revisited multiple times, as seen in Part 03, Pages 21-22, where the narrative lingers on a character’s internal conflict. While revisiting these themes can be important for character development, it can lessen their overall impact. Condensing these moments would sharpen the narrative and ensure that each scene contributes effectively to the overarching story arc without slowing the pace.

Professional Presentation
The overall presentation of “Lake of Tears” reflects a high degree of professionalism. The layout is clear and intuitive, guiding the reader through the story without confusion. This clarity is essential to maintaining the reader’s immersion in the world crafted by the creators.
One area that could benefit from refinement is the lettering. In some panels, such as Part 04, Page 27, the text feels cramped, which may hinder readability. Adjusting the font spacing could alleviate this issue, making the dialogue more accessible and enhancing the reader’s experience, thereby ensuring that the text complements the artwork without overwhelming it.
Let’s Not Get Lost in the Lake
“Lake of Tears” is a significant achievement in the comic realm, showcasing a robust narrative paired with powerful artwork. While there are areas where the comic could be further refined as mentioned in this critique, it still stands out as a compelling piece of work. With its emotionally resonant themes and visually striking presentation, “Lake of Tears” leaves a lasting impact on its readers.
