The Glyph Comics Awards have officially announced their nominees for 2025, shining a spotlight on the finest in comic storytelling while celebrating a growing Nigerian presence in the industry. This year’s selections showcase a fusion of innovative narratives and a bold reimagining of cultural storytelling that continues to elevate Nigerian comics on the global stage.

Among the nominees for Story of the Year are works that have captivated audiences with their imaginative plots and rich cultural depth. AKOGUN: BRUTALIZER OF GODS (Issues #1-#3), written by Murewa Ayodele and illustrated by Dotun Akande, has been praised for its dynamic storytelling and striking visuals. Meanwhile, CHIBOK #2, written by Jide Martin and Praise-Jah Orimolade with illustrations from Alexander Oriwoh, has received acclaim for its poignant social commentary and engaging narrative style.
The awards feature a diverse range of categories that highlight the multifaceted nature of comic creation. In the Best Cover category, titles such as CELESTIAL EYES VOL 1: THE FIRST CYCLE by John Uche, featuring artwork from CuisEl Peach and Wisdom Onyeukwu, JOGUNOMI ISSUE 0 by Adedayo A. Erivic, and METALA ISSUE 5, underscore the importance of visual appeal in capturing readers’ attention. Recognising exceptional writing and artistry, the Best Writer and Best Artist categories include nominees like Murewa Ayodele and Dotun Akande for AKOGUN: BRUTALIZER OF GODS, Justin Clement and Stanley Obende for AVONOME ISSUE 12, Adedayo Erivic for JOGUNOMI ISSUE 0, and Jide Martin, Praise-Jah, and Alexander Oriowoh for CHIBOK ISSUE 2.

Characters also take centre stage in this year’s nominations, with heroic female figures like Onwanuju (from Celestial Eyes) being celebrated for their complexity and depth. Additionally, the Rising Star Award acknowledges emerging creators like Wale Awelenje for his contribution to BLADE OF THE BLACK BIRD and Adedayo Erivic, who are bringing fresh perspectives and inventive storytelling to the industry.
The Glyph Comics Awards have long served as a platform to celebrate excellence in comic artistry amongst the coloured community around the world. The event is set to honour both established veterans and emerging talents, and the 2025 nominations further highlight Nigeria’s expanding influence in this creative sphere.
