Erivic Adedayo, the founder of Comic Archive Africa and the convener of Comic-Con Ibadan, has released his first self-published comic book, Jogunomi, in the afternoon hours of Monday, July 8, 2024..
Erivic first hinted at the comic book title in 2022 via his Instagram handle. Since then, the anticipation for its release has been building steadily. The excitement surrounding Jogunomi was heightened by its novel approach, featuring a unique art style created by Erivic himself, known as Afroblot.
During a presentation at the Geek Pop-Up event on Saturday, June 29, 2024, Erivic shared the inspiration behind Afroblot. He discussed the challenges self-publishers face with printing and how he drew inspiration from the traditional black-and-white manga comic art style, as well as the early US red-blue art style. These influences helped him create an art form that reduces publishing costs while still evoking powerful emotions.
Erivic explained that Afroblot is a blend of "Afro," representing Africa, and "blot," reflecting the concept of ink splashes. The art style employs a distinctive palette of red, off-white, white, and black, as showcased in several preview images leading up to the comic's release. Afroblot is gradually gaining traction and has been adopted by comic and digital artists worldwide.
Jogunomi capitalises on this momentum, debuting with issue 0, which is available for free. Erivic announced that he would be present at the Yoruba Party, where fans can receive snippets of Jogunomi art.
