This Saturday, at Krates in Lagos, the writer, organiser, and co-founder of Brown Roof Studios will host an exclusive live reading of Tales ‘N’ Tells, the collaborative book series that has steadily grown from an online curiosity into a fully-fledged community project. Running from 2pm to 8pm, the event will mark the series’ first public unveiling beyond the digital spaces where it has gathered an enthusiastic following.
Ayegbusi, regarded as one of the new cultural anchors of Ibadan’s creative scene, has built a reputation for convening talent and orchestrating platforms where emerging voices can be heard. His role in founding Brown Roof Studios, alongside his stewardship of Comic Con Ibadan, has positioned him as a key advocate for artistic collaboration beyond the city. Tales ‘N’ Tells is an extension of this work, embodying both his personal interest in narrative experimentation and his commitment to collective authorship.
The series itself has been shaped by a small but formidable group of contributors. Among them is Onome Adesida, known for the Cursed Clouds comic series; Dapo Oni, co-founder of Depee Comics and creator of Dark Alte; and Tunde Adebona, popularly recognised as Toondays, whose visual interpretations have helped establish the series’ distinctive atmosphere. Together, they have woven a shared fictional world that blends their individual creative signatures into a coherent, evolving universe.
Much of the early momentum for Tales ‘N’ Tells was generated online. The project’s Instagram page, @tales_n_tells, became its first point of public engagement, a digital window into the developing narrative, visual sketches, and thematic fragments that hinted at what was to come. Through these posts, the team cultivated a circle of early readers and supporters who followed the project’s progress from concept to near-completion. The steady growth of this online community set the stage for the next logical step: an in-person experience where the creators and their audience could meet within the same physical space.
Saturday’s live reading represents that transition. Rather than a conventional book launch, the event is intended as an immersive encounter, an opportunity for attendees to hear the stories performed aloud, understand the creative processes behind them, and participate in the shared excitement of bringing a once-digital idea into the real world. Krates, with its established role as a gathering place for creative audiences in Lagos, provides an intimate and fitting backdrop for this moment.
For Ayegbusi, the reading is a culmination of quiet work undertaken over months. Reflecting on the journey, he notes how fulfilling it is to finally share the stories in person with the community that has supported them from the start.
