Akosua Hanson's award-winning "Moongirls" is an enthralling comic series about queer “supersheroes” as they tackle African societal issues. The stories whisk readers into a realm brimming with drama, fantasy, and intrigue, promising an unforgettable voyage. Let’s delve into the captivating narrative of Chapters 1, 2, and 3.
Into the Night
Chapter One, titled "Night Shift," opens with an evocative quote from Alan Moore: “The truth of the world is that it is chaotic... The truth is far more frightening. Nobody is in control. The world is rudderless.” This sets a haunting tone, drawing readers into the unfolding story.
We are introduced to Fatima, who, in her supershero guise, is known as Sekhmet. Her complex character is swiftly established, offering a glimpse into why the comic is titled "Moongirls." Fatima's introspection reveals a life steeped in philosophical musings and the harsh realities of prostitution, as she smokes beneath the moonlight. This scene introduces the chaotic world order and the distractions of life, especially sex. Her memories of lost dreams are interrupted by the emergence of Sekhmet, her formidable alter ego.
In a gripping sequence, Sekhmet combats uniformed men attempting to assault a lone bystander under the night’s cover, showcasing her strength and moral resolve. This chapter sets the stage for a deeper exploration of her character and the world she inhabits.
Deepening the Depths
Chapter Two ventures into the mysterious Lunar realm, challenging religious and societal norms. An opening quote mocks the mainstream notion of prayer: “We call on patriarchal gods to carry our prayers to God... Patriarchal gods who will send prayers for our imprisonment.” This provocative statement hints at the chapter’s themes.
We meet Fu, who transforms into Shu in her superhero mode. Fu’s dual life as a DJ and a supershero with hypnotic abilities is compelling. Her music irresistibly captivates listeners, making her a powerful and enigmatic figure. Fu’s backstory is poignant; as a “tomboy” in a prejudiced society, she faces constant persecution. She stands up to a hypocritical priest and endures harsh repercussions, including expulsion from school and being grounded by her mother.
The narrative then shifts to a barren village where women are unjustly blamed for infertility and miscarriages. The villagers hire a prophet to cleanse them of this perceived curse, but the reality is far different. Fu’s journey continues as she responds to a holographic prompt, sneaking out of her home to uncover more secrets.
Secrets Behind the Tension
Chapter Three, "Underwater Dreams," introduces Dede, who transforms into Nun. Moving through the underwater world under a full moon, Dede contemplates the plight of the barren village. The villagers’ sufferings are revealed to be caused by harmful chemicals from gold mining, polluting the sea and causing severe health issues.
Dede’s quest leads to the ancient marine kingdom of Aksum, where powerful spirits reside. These spirits can influence human fate but have exercised restraint despite the environmental destruction. Dede’s doubts and inquiries uncover deeper secrets within this hidden world, leaving her skeptical about the future.
