In response to skyrocketing demand for daily webtoon content, Zebra Comics, a leading African digital comics platform, has teased the launch of Zebra Comics Global, a new section of its platform that will feature foreign webtoons—specifically Korean and Chinese titles.
Despite already publishing weekly episodes, Zebra Comics reports that its readers are clamouring for new content daily. "Readers don't know or care how long it takes to produce content," the CEO, EN Ejob, explained. “They want it every day.”
Zebra Comics exclusively told TheACE that they are working towards partnerships with content creators from Korea and China to bridge the gap between current production capacity and reader expectations. This collaboration will allow the platform to maintain a steady stream of new episodes while giving its in-house team more time to produce original African stories at a sustainable pace.
While the incoming content will primarily consist of K-webtoons, Zebra Comics sees the initiative as more than just a stopgap. “It’s an opportunity for the world to see K-webtoons on the same stage with African webtoons,” the CEO said. The aim is to elevate perceptions of African comics by placing them alongside globally recognised formats and creators. “If Koreans are willing to share the same stage with us, it means we too have comics of top quality.”
“We will be able to publish many new episodes EVERY SINGLE DAY for the next 3 years,” he added.
The initiative is being positioned similarly to how Nollywood films have gained credibility through platforms like Prime Video, which showcases only high-quality Nigerian productions. By curating international titles and maintaining a high production standard, Zebra Comics hopes to boost the credibility and visibility of African comics to a global audience.
